Plantar Fasciitis (PF) has been showing up in clinic a lot lately. Thankfully for the sufferers relief through acupuncture has been achieved. Acupuncture is known to reduce inflammation, stimulate local muscles to enhance the lapsed foot arch, alleviate pain and encourage better engagement to support body weight through activity.

Being one of the most common causes of heel pain PF develops when the plantar fascia, a thick and fibrous band which travels through the foot has been strained or developed micro tears due to overuse, injury or incorrect walking patterns.

Given that the plantar fascia is an integral ligament that stabilises the arch, distributes body weight when walking and is a shock absorber any inflammation or pain can readily impede on daily activity. PF usually develops slowly and can be an intermittent pain depending on use and whilst rest is recommended it’s not always possible which is where acupuncture can aid in the recovery process.

Risk Factors Of Plantar Fasciitis
• Flat footed or high arches: Both types of arches can put the plantar fascia under stretch and strain leading to micro-tearing or inflammation of the fascia.
• Occupation: Employment that requires walking or standing on hard floor surfaces for long periods can also put additional strain on the plantar fascia.
• Overweight: Carrying those extra kilos puts the plantar fascia under extra stretch and strain.
• Activity: Plantar fasciitis can be considered an overuse injury in athletic types when the constant activity puts extra strain on the plantar fascia and structures of the foot. Example: Runners and ballet dancers..
